Good Health ...and all the money invested on us not having it!!

This fact hit home for me today. After watching the documentary "Hungry for Change", it dawned on me that the reason our North American society is so reluctant to help us lead a healthier lifestyle is that there is SO much profit to be made from the medical industry and the producers of processed food which would be greatly minimized if we all ate more whole food diets!

"What would happen if everybody ate lots and lots of fresh organic food that was minimally processed?

I think we would have an epidemic of health. I think the stock market would tremble. The drug industry is a half trillion dollar a year, worldwide conglomerate; almost three hundred billion dollars just in North America. This is really really big business. What would happen if everybody were well?

There’s no money in health. You see, good health makes a lot of sense, but it doesn’t make a lot of dollars.”

Sprouting for optimum health!

SOAK & SPROUT: Seeds, nuts, grains and beans are covered in chemicals called enzyme inhibitors which prevent premature germination and store nutrients for plant growth. When humans consume these chemicals, they reduce the absorption of important minerals and proteins causing nutrient deficiencies and other health issues. Soaking and sprouting bypasses this issue as it activates the seed and neutralizes the inhibitors.

Atelier Restaurant

Here's a pic of the building across the street from where I work. I thought it was abandoned and just waiting to be condemned but I found out from the cafe owners next door that it was in fact a chic restaurant! Its name Atelier translates to "workshop" and I guess that accounts for its industrial appearance. After 2 previous cancellations, my sister and I finally made good on our reservation and enjoyed a culinary evening with a 12-course tasting menu serving 'New Canadian' food based on hypermodern culinary technique and technology.". Our meal included salmon, cod, tuna, prawns, clams, elk, boar, rabbit liver, and lamb.

Started off with bread and butter served in a tube.

We opted for the wine pairing which included a new wine with most courses. The half servings were plenty for this gal. (After the meal, I collapsed in a coma on my couch!) My favourite wine was the final dessert wine but by the end of the meal, we were so satiated, we couldn't really savour it fully.

A colourful start for the first course. This one was my sister's fave.

Call me crabby but this was my favourite course!

This was one of my faves. The egg yolk was prepared "sous vide" and was velvety in texture.

Glad that I finally got to see what happens behind those doors!

Five Simple Brain Exercises
from Dr. Marie Savard

The premise of these brain aerobics or neurobics is to do familiar things, but do them slightly differently.

Switch Hands
So, a really easy thing to do is to try one of your daily activities -- brushing your teeth or dialing a phone number -- with your non-dominant hand.

I used my left hand to brush my teeth this morning and it's a lot harder than you realize. I really had to concentrate. And basically, what that does, apparently, is strengthen those pathways and connections in the opposite side of your brain.

Close Your Eyes
Try a safe activity, like eating or showering, with your eyes closed. That forces you to use and strengthen your other senses. Most of what your brain does is process what your senses are bringing in. So, closing your eyes forces the brain to process that information in new ways. But one thing you obviously shouldn't do with your eyes closed is drive.

Play Games
Games help you strategize, but the brain is particularly stimulated by multi-tasking. So, play games with other people that require you to strategize and interact socially at the same time. Examples include board, word and card games.

Don't Get Repetitive, Do Something Different
Introducing novelty is crucial. Your brain doesn't need anything complicated; it just needs something new. So, take a new way to work, or sit in a different seat. It forces you to look at the world from a new perspective. Read book or magazine upside down...

Watch What You Consume
You want to make sure to consume brain-boosting foods or supplements. Try antioxidants in food, such as berries, tea, and leafy greens. And you also want to consume fish oils, which also come in supplements.

We used to say it takes 21 tries to learn a new habit. But brain exercise is something you should be doing constantly throughout the day. Try to integrate it into all of your daily activities. We have to constantly reroute activities throughout the day. But a lifelong habit of challenging the brain gives you a greater reserve of mind muscle to use. Think of it as your retirement account. Add to your 401k of the brain so you have more to draw from when you need it.
